First Friday Artist's Reception

The summer “art walk” season in downtown Cañon City is in full swing! Join us at The Artists’ Gallery on First Friday, August 4th, for our monthly artist’s reception. We are welcoming guests from 5 to 8 p.m. for an inspiring evening of art, conversation and music! Featured Artist, Marcão, will be presenting a solo exhibit entitled, “My Storied Past--Els”. “This body of new work is a celebration of my ‘discovery’ of the value of fine pastels on fine paper as a superior art medium,” explains the painter. The collection is done entirely in pastels, a departure from his work in oils and watercolor. The added aspect of a written commentary by Marcão will be displayed alongside each piece of artwork. What “storied past” will he reveal? The gallery’s front window displays, imaginatively designed by artist Diana Werthman, are in celebration of Plein Air Painting. “En plein air” is the French expression for “in the open air”, and the practice was made into a true art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to capture the effects of light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and easels, allowed artists the freedom to paint out-of-doors. Today, plein air painting is a flourishing trend in the art world. Look for Marcão’s plein air landscape paintings scattered among Diana’s whimsical creations in the window displays! Come meet Marcão in person and discuss his new work. Plus, he is offering a 20% discount on purchases of his art work this night only!
