About Us

VFW Post 4061, stands as a prominent and welcoming hub for veterans of foreign service, their families, and the broader community in Fremont County. Under the banner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, this Post sustains a centuries-long tradition of fellowship, advocacy, public service, and patriotic duty—all carried out in a spirit of inclusivity and outreach.

A Mission Rooted in History

The core mission of Post?4061 echoes that of the national VFW: to foster comradeship among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, to serve our veterans, the military, and our communities, and to advocate on behalf of all veterans—a commitment clearly articulated and visibly upheld in every initiative the Post undertakes.

VFW’s origins trace back to 1899, when servicemembers returning from the Spanish–American War and Philippine Insurrection—often wounded, ill, unsupported, or penniless—formed mutual aid societies. These evolved into the Veterans of Foreign Wars, initially gaining traction in states like Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. By 1915, membership swelled to 5,000, and by 1936, nearly 200,000. The national body played instrumental roles in founding the Veterans Administration, launching the original and modern GI Bills, creating the national cemetery system, advocating for Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome victims, and contributing to memorials like the Vietnam, Korean War, Women in Military Service, and the Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial.

Through these efforts, the VFW exemplifies how a grassroots initiative transformed into a powerful national institution—and Post?4061 continues that legacy locally with equal dedication.
